Investing

  • The Bogleheads’ Guide to Investing by by Taylor Larimore - first book on investing recommended in Reddit’s r/personalfinance/. Good book to get familiar with investments topic. Book covers topics starting from basic securities, recommendations on long-term investing strategy, building portfolio, rebalancing, taxation and much more useful information that can help you take care of you personal financial independence. Some parts in book are dedicated for US citizens, but most of the information can be generically applied.

Fiction

  • No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai - book tells a deeply tragic story of a man’s life in pre-war Japan. This book left me with a feeling that one can be born “into” a tragedy by unfortunate fault of the universe. The author in this book, realised his fears of dying forgotten by everyone and despised by even himself. Osamu Dazai took his own life at the age of 38. I seen several times this book being compared with Serotonin by Michel Houellebecq wich I find to be an unfair comparison - while Serotonin is similar in the theme, it is still the tale of numbness and regret, No Longer Human is much more psychologically violent and trembelling run towards the death of I.

  • Story of the Eye by Georges Bataille - well, that’s a unique read. In short: sex, violance and death. Thinking about how and why this book came into existence and researching around the life of it’s author, George Bataille, opened me to the works of Susan Sontag, Jaques Lacan and Hans Bellmer.

  • Laughter in the Dark by Vladimir Nabokov - beautifully written and cruel. Scene from the chalet in the end of the book is one of the most vicious and emotionally brutal scenes I’ve encountered in fiction literature.
